Source Text: John Quincy Adams's letter (Quincy, Massachusetts, July 29, 1844) to Anna Quincy Thaxter, read aloud by William Lloyd Garrison at the Tranquility Grove celebration on August 2, 1844.
We are met to exchange congratulations on the anniversary of an event singular in the history of civilization, the restoration of 800,000 human beings from a state of degrading oppression to the rights bestowed upon them by the God of nature at their birth.
A day of reason.
A day of clear light.
The pledge of Power and of Will.
That the bondage of man shall cease.
The manacle shall drop from every limb.
The ties of nature, no longer outraged.
Self-evident truths, fulfilled.
And mockeries, belied.
